2017 French Market Opening Day & Prairie Path Park Ribbon Cutting

Posted on: May 25, 2017

Discover what’s new in the Glen Ellyn community on Sunday, June 4 as the downtown celebrates opening day of the French Market, at its new location, and invites the public to celebrate the newly renovated Prairie Path Park with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The combination of the market’s vitality and the new life brought to the Prairie Path Park creates new opportunities for Glen Ellyn residents and visitors to experience this corridor of the downtown.

Prairie Path Park Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Adjacent to the French Market, to the east, a ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate the recently completed improvements to the Prairie Path Park will be held at noon on Sunday, June 4.  This May, in an effort to improve access to the park and enhance the experience for visitors, several Glen Ellyn public and nonprofit agencies joined together to upgrade the park.

The Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn partnered with the Glen Ellyn Park District, the Glen Ellyn Public Library and the Village of Glen Ellyn to bring added interest, beauty and recreation to the park. The club awarded a total of $10,000 in grant money for the project.

Two outdoor chess tables and an outdoor ping pong table were installed by the park district and the park district is further improving the area with plantings, mulch and other landscaping touches. Park visitors are encouraged to bring ping pong paddles and balls, chess pieces and checker sets to the park. Game equipment also may be borrowed from the Glen Ellyn Civic Center, 535 Duane Street, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. All equipment must be returned by 4pm the same day.

The Glen Ellyn Public Library has installed a StoryWalk ® in the park. The StoryWalk ® consists of a series of signs that, when read sequentially, tells readers a tale as they meander through the garden adjacent to the gazebo. The all-weather StoryWalk ® will be refreshed periodically to bring new stories.

Officials from all partnering agencies will be present at the ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the continued beautification of Glen Ellyn.

New Location for French Market

The Glen Ellyn French Market, hosted by the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce, opens for the season on Sunday, June 4. The Market is moving to a new location this year, in the Main Street Train Station South parking lot (between Main Street and Forest Avenue).  This new location offers the community greater access and more visibility of this event than in previous years. The Market is held every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., spanning June 4 through October 29.

“The downtown area’s vibrancy will create endless possibilities for a new and improved French Market,” said Dawn Smith, executive director of the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce. “In addition to providing fresh produce and locally grown food, it offers a space for residents and visitors to come together to see neighbors and discover our local community every Sunday.”

The French Market supports over 40 local vendors, with that number expected to grow as the season progresses. Find locally grown fresh produce, organic meats, fresh flowers, baked goods, jewelry and so much more. Also new to the Market this year will be the addition of local entertainment and special programming, rotating on a weekly basis.  Plus, live music and face painting for children.

This year, to celebrate the Market’s opening day, there will be free giveaways to attendees on a first come, first serve basis.  For more information on visiting the French Market, please visit the Chamber of Commerce website at www.glenellynchamber.com. Additionally, interested vendors can contact Leslie Cahill with Bensidoun USA at (312) 575-0286.
