Hammocks in Parks

Posted on: May 17, 2018

Hammocks have become very popular in our parks and the Park District has been monitoring the effect the use and the straps have on our trees. We ask that you please follow these safety tips and guidelines when utilizing hammocks in the parks:

  • Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing your hammock.
  • Make sure the trees and branches that hammocks are hung from are sturdy and are no less than 4 inches in diameter. Failure to do so will adversely affect the long-term health of the tree
  • Hammocks should be hung no more than 5 feet off the ground. Do not use park equipment such as picnic tables to hang the hammocks
  • Hammocks are not allowed in playgrounds, over hard surfaces, across pathways, or in any area that could have a negative impact on other patrons or park property. This includes railings, shade structures, buildings, etc.
  • Please be respectful,  tread lightly, avoid the natural areas and landscape and clean up after yourself when you are done.

Please note, the Glen Ellyn Park District reserves the right to suspend the use of hammocks if they are being misused, park property is getting damaged, or if the use has a negative impact on  other park patrons. Thank you for your cooperation.
