Outdoor Ice Skating Update

Posted on: January 11, 2022

Check the current ice conditions for Newton Park, Lake Ellyn, Lake Foxcroft, and the Polar Plaza by visiting

Remember to follow the flag system at Newton Park, Lake Foxcroft, and the Polar Plaza and the light system at Lake Ellyn. Only skate when you see the green flag/light. When the red flag/light is displayed, it is not safe to skate. Skating is unsupervised and at your own risk. As always, please be respectful of others when visiting any of the rinks. In addition, please do not visit if you or a member of your household have tested positive for or are experiencing symptoms of Covid-19.

Visitors to the rinks must bring their own skates as skate rentals are not available. If you need skates, check with Paul’s Shoe Service, 486 N Main St, Glen Ellyn, (630) 790-1030, as they have used skates for sale and exchange.

When the ice is safe for skating (green light is on), lights will be available from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The Boathouse will also be available as a warming shelter for skaters during the hours below. When inside the Boathouse, all patrons are required to wear face coverings. No concession will be offered and please limit your time inside the facility.

  • Monday-Friday: 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Sunday: Noon to 8 p.m.
  • January 17 & 18: 11a.m. to 8 p.m

Please note, due to the current ice thickness, the District is unable to safely get large equipment on the ice for grooming.

When the green flag is flying, indicating ice is safe for skating, skating hours at Lake Foxcroft are 6 a.m. to sunset. Please note, this location does not feature lights or a warming shelter.

Weather and ice conditions permitting, the Newton Park ice rink is designated for open hockey except for the hours of 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. when the rink designated for open/public ice skating. If no ice skaters are present during the designated hours above, hockey may be played but must stop immediately once skaters arrive. If no hockey players are present during hockey hours, skaters may use the ice but must immediately exist once hockey players arrive.
