Recipient of the Glen Ellyn Park District’s Volunteer of the Year Award Announced

Posted on: March 8, 2016

Joe Cardona was named the Glen Ellyn Park District Volunteer of the Year at the annual Community Awards Breakfast on Saturday, March 5, 2016.

As representative of the Glen Ellyn Titans Youth Basketball organization, Joe initiated and presented the idea of renovating the outdoor basketball court at the Main Street Recreation Center in spring, 2015. His plan not only included ideas to improve the court but also a commitment to fund those improvements.

The project involved the complete overhaul of the existing outdoor asphalt basketball court and the surrounding area which was in relatively poor condition. The work included a new Sport Court surfacing on an expanded asphalt base, basketball poles with glass backboards, park benches, expansion of the fence and signage. Total cost exceeded $40,000 which was funded largely by the Titans and their supporters. The final product provides an outstanding basketball court free to the public while also providing improved opportunities for the patrons of the Main Street Recreation Center.

“The Park District is truly fortunate to have community members like Joe who generously contributes his time and efforts towards the betterment and improvement of the Glen Ellyn community,” said Julia Nephew, President of the Glen Ellyn Park District Board of Commissioners. “Witnessing the instant and continued use of the newly renovated court is a testament to his efforts, volunteerism and financial contributions to the renovation of the Main Street Recreation Center outdoor basketball court.”

The Titans organization, led by its president, Joe Cardona, has provided a competitive youth travel basketball program to the community since 1999 with over a thousand players participating during that time.
