It’s estimated that approximately one out of every three homes in the U.S. has someone who plays soccer. Soccer, also referred to as “futbol” in some European and South American countries, is an exciting and challenging sport that is loved by boys and girls alike.
The Glen Ellyn Park District offers a recreational soccer league for area youth, called “House Soccer”. “It’s a great league for those wanting to try soccer for the first time or for those wanting a less competitive experience,” said Brad Thomas, Recreation Supervisor for the Glen Ellyn Park District. “There’s one practice during each week, and games are played on the weekends.”
The Park District’s House Soccer league is run with the assistance of the Glen Ellyn Youth Soccer Organization. The program is geared towards boys and girls in Pre-K through tenth grade; it teaches soccer skills and good sportsmanship, while promoting physical conditioning and providing an overall fun experience.
Participants have the option to utilize the Buddy System. “The Buddy System allows for players to make a friend request at the time of registration,” explained Thomas. “We organize teams based on the schools that players attend.” Parents will be notified of their child’s team placement towards the end of March.
Games are played at Ackerman Park, typically between 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. Weekly practices will be determined by the volunteer coach’s schedule. For those interested in coaching House Soccer, please contact Brad Thomas at [email protected]. “We’re always looking for volunteer coaches for all of our programs,” said Thomas. “Without the volunteer coaches, our programs would not be as plentiful or as successful as they are.” A coaches meeting is scheduled for March 20, 2018 at 6:00 pm at the Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center in Glen Ellyn.

Players should bring their own soccer ball to practice, and they must wear shin guards underneath their socks. Eyewear must be protective. Players will be provided with a t-shirt (Pre-K through 2nd grade), or a jersey and shorts (3rd grade and up) to wear during games. For additional information, visit www.gepark.org/house-soccer.
