Sand Play Areas Bees & Wasps

Posted on: July 11, 2018

Have you noticed caution tape or signs near our sand play areas? Burrowing Bees, Sand Wasps and Cicada Killers are making their annual appearance again. But don’t be alarmed. They are very important pollinators – and they also like to inhabit areas we frequent, like sand playgrounds and volleyball courts, where they often create their in-ground nests. These bees and wasps are non-aggressive and very unlikely to sting, unless they are stepped on or grabbed. But please use caution around these areas. Keep a safe distance and they shouldn’t bother you. Their life span runs 4 to 6 weeks, starting in early July. Areas impacted include the sand play areas at Sunset Park, Sunset Pool, Maryknoll Park, Newton Park, Panfish Park, as well as, the sand volleyball court at Ackerman SFC.
