Talk Series Offers Fun, Learning, Fellowship

Posted on: August 17, 2018

An exciting new opportunity for moms to learn something new, while enjoying fellowship with other moms in the Glen Ellyn area, has recently been developed through a unique partnership between the Glen Ellyn Park District and the Glen Ellyn Moms Village. Whether you’re a new mom, an empty nester, or a busy mom with a family of any size, you’ll enjoy the new MasterMoms Talk Series.

“We want these evenings to offer an entertaining Mom’s Night Out opportunity, but we also want to present an educational aspect to it,” said Alicia Donovan, blogger and creator of Glen Ellyn Moms Village. “We’ve chosen topics that are relevant to various stages of motherhood. The Glen Ellyn Moms Village blog that I created is devoted to providing inspiration to moms of all ages and a sense of community for all. It’s a great resource for moms in the area. This series will build on that in a fun and interesting way. ”

The MasterMoms Talk Series will offer a fun-filled evening once each month, with a variety of interesting speakers and topics. “We’re kicking off our program series on Wednesday, September 12th with Laurie Palau, owner of Simply B Organized and author of “Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Organizing”,” added Donovan. “She’ll be presenting her “Clutter Clinic”, which is based on her weekly podcast called “This ORGANIZED Life”. She’ll teach us how to reduce clutter and how to maintain an organized space, as well as how to master time management in a digital world. We’re so excited to have her here in Glen Ellyn! We’re also hosting a book signing for her prior to the event, and we’ll have a “tips and tricks” shopping event at The Container Store on Thursday, September 13th.” A second book signing will take place on Thursday at Prairie Path Books in Wheaton.

The program series will be held at the Lake Ellyn Boathouse, located at Lake Ellyn Park (645 Lenox Rd in Glen Ellyn), with each session starting off with a “meet and greet” social time from 7:00 – 7:30 pm. The Talk Series will take place from 7:30 – 9:00 pm. Attendees are encouraged to bring a beverage of choice (wine is suggested), with light snacks and desserts provided by the Glen Ellyn Park District and Glen Ellyn Moms Village. “The cost is $25 per session, for both residents and non-residents of Glen Ellyn,” said Donovan. “The Talk Series is open to everyone, not just moms, although the topics we present will be more relevant for them. Our goals are to connect people in the community, to enjoy a fun evening, and to learn something new.”

Donovan has also scheduled some terrific speakers for October and November. “Kathryn Osgood, of Little Bear Photography, will teach us how to use our cameras to get the best photographs of our kids,” she explained. “We’ll learn how to find the right scenery and create the right lighting, and how to edit the photos once they’re completed. Her presentation will be Wednesday, October 10th.”

November 7th’s topic is “Entertaining with Joy, Style, and Love”. Professional event planner Diana Laufenberg, owner of Celebrate in Style Events, will teach terrific tips and tricks for hosting fun and memorable holiday parties. You’ll learn how to organize catering, flowers, desserts, and space planning for hosting events in your home.

The topic for November 14th is “Cyber Safety in Today’s Internet World“. For moms who don’t understand the current internet apps and trends, and want to know how to set parental controls on their children’s devices in the home, this Talk Series is for you! Liz Repking, mom of three and founder of Cyber Safety Consulting, will provide interactive education about technology in our ever-changing society. She’ll cover restrictions on iDevices and controls on Google and YouTube, and will offer demonstrations with Snapchat and Instagram, among other famously popular social media sites.
