WERQ-a-Thon Works to Eliminate Breast Cancer

Posted on: October 3, 2018

Join the Glen Ellyn Park District in helping to fight and eliminate breast cancer. On Saturday, October 20th, the Park District will host its annual fundraiser to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation; this year’s event will be the very first WERQ-a-Thon, led by WERQ Fitness instructors Sarella Kelly and Xenia Demo.

“In past years, the Park District has hosted Zumbathons to raise funds for Susan G. Komen,” said Kelly. “This year we’re switching it up with WERQ, which is an addictive cardio dance class that uses popular Top 40 pop and hip hop songs for the music. It’s an absolute blast, and we’re inviting people of all ages to join us. Adults, kids, men, and women are welcome – we’re hoping for a great turnout so we can offer a really nice donation to the Komen Foundation, the largest organization devoted to fighting breast cancer.”

The WERQ-a-Thon will take place in the studio (or in the gym, if the turnout requires it) at the Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center in Glen Ellyn. The WERQ dance party takes place from 12:15 – 2:15 pm. A suggested minimum donation of $10 is requested.

“We’ll have food and beverages for all participants, and the first 50 to attend will receive a free t-shirt,” added Kelly. “This Open House-style event is convenient for everyone, because participants can come at any time and leave whenever they want. You don’t have to stay the entire two hours; we’re just encouraging people to bring their friends and family members to join us in raising money for a great cause.”

For those interested in learning more about WERQ Fitness, three classes are offered each week at Glen Ellyn Park District’s Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center. “I’ve been teaching at Ackerman SFC for the past three years, and taught at WERQ Fitness in downtown Chicago before that,” Kelly explained. “I’ve been a dancer and an ice skater my whole life, and have always enjoyed exercising. Once I tried these classes, I fell in love with dancing to the Top 40 music; it was energizing and really fun. Then after having my two sons, I decided to get certified to teach it. It was a good way to get back in shape; I lost the baby weight and then some. I’ve been teaching WERQ ever since.” Group Fitness classes at Ackerman SFC are free for fitness members, but drop-in options are also available for non-members.

Kelly’s favorite part about teaching WERQ Fitness is seeing each dancer’s face when they hear their favorite song during the workout. “I see them get even more into it. It’s such a good vibe in the classroom, and we come out feeling lifted up, which is priceless,” she said. “The sense of community is also terrific. After moving to Glen Ellyn four years ago, and beginning to teach WERQ here, I’ve made a lot of friends from my classes.”

Kelly believes strongly in the benefits of WERQ Fitness, but is equally devoted to helping find a cure for breast cancer. “This is my first fundraiser through the Park District, and I hope we get a fantastic turnout,” she said. “In addition to raising money for a great cause, the WERQ-a-Thon is a great way for families to be together, to get some great exercise, and to have a fun time!”
