Register by March 9 for Stingers and Ducks Rugby

Rugby is an exciting, fast-paced sport that has been played in various forms for hundreds of years. Its popularity continues, thanks to programs like the one offered by the Glen Ellyn Park District.

“All our Rugby players participate in the games and are kept involved since each player is an important part of the team,” said Clint Babicz, Assistant Superintendent of Athletics for the Glen Ellyn Park District. “Without teamwork, there is little chance for success; over the years, teamwork has helped the Glen Ellyn Youth Rugby program be very successful.”

In 2016, the U12 and High School Varsity Rugby teams were Illinois State Champions, while the U14 team was a State finalist. In 2017, the U12 and U14 teams were State Champions, and the High School Varsity team was Conference Champion. In 2018, the program captured State Championships at the U12, U14, and High School Frosh levels.

“Players are taught proper tackling techniques, along with the rules governing how a tackle can be made,” added Babicz. “Failure to tackle properly results in penalties against the player committing the infraction. Safety is of the utmost importance. Players are continually reminded that a player’s head may not be a target, nor can the head be used as a means for executing a tackle.” Use of a mouthguard is required, and appropriate footwear is recommended.

The Glen Ellyn Park District receives very positive feedback from players and their families, as Rugby promotes and requires camaraderie, fitness, and teamwork, and players benefit greatly by participating in the sport.

“Our objective is to develop players’ skills with a focus on fundamentals, and to build their confidence and self-esteem during practices and games,” said Babicz. “Players learn the value of teamwork and good sportsmanship, and they benefit from strong relationships with other players due to the social aspect of the game. We teach leadership skills, and reinforce respect for the rules, for the game, and for others.”

The Glen Ellyn Park District’s Youth Rugby program is open to grades 3-12. Beginners are welcome in all age groups. Players in grades 3-4 will participate in Rookie Rugby, a non-contact camp. Stingers Rugby is for kids in grades 5-8, and Ducks Rugby is for high school players.

Practices for Stingers and Ducks begin in March, and the season ends in early June after the State Championship. The registration deadline for these levels is March 9, 2019. The Rookie Rugby program begins April 13, 2019.
