After the success of last fall’s initial MasterMoms Talk Series events, coordinator Alicia Donovan has lined up two more very informative speakers to address topics that are compelling and thought-provoking, and are important to moms in Glen Ellyn and the surrounding communities. “We’ll continue to meet in the Lake Ellyn Boathouse for these fun-filled evenings,” said Donovan, blogger and creator of Glen Ellyn Moms Village. “We will offer light snacks, desserts, and water, but moms who attend can bring their own beverage; we strongly suggest bringing wine!” The talk series is presented by the Glen Ellyn Park District in partnership with Glen Ellyn Moms Village.
On March 13th, 2019, from 7pm-9pm, Dr. Kymberly Larson will speak about the importance of sleep for children and adolescents. “Dr. Larson owns and operates Marvelous Minds, a pediatric and adolescent clinic that specializes in neuropsychological evaluations, individual and group therapy, and parenting education,” explained Donovan. “She’ll teach us about the impact that sleep, or lack of sleep, has on attention. She’ll also offer tips and tricks regarding what works to get school-aged children to go to sleep at an appropriate time.”
According to Dr. Larson, children with chronic sleep debt have higher incidences of depression, anxiety, alcohol and drug use, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. “It’s important for moms to understand the effect that technology has on their children’s sleep patterns,” added Donovan. “You’ll learn how to navigate this tricky aspect of parenting, and you’ll understand how much sleep your kids need and how to maintain a proper sleep schedule.” Dr. Larson also works with children with ADHD, sleep disorders, sensory issues, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. “Our previous Talk Series events were a huge success – they were almost all sold out,” said Donovan. “We’re excited that this concept has been so well-received. We’ve had moms of all ages come to hear our speakers, from new moms all the way up to grandmas, some of whom came with their daughters. Moms of all ages and stages of life have enjoyed the series so far.”
Donovan surveyed the audiences at previous events, and discovered some of the attendees were not moms yet, but were pregnant. “It was so fun to see that, and to have all those women together in one room,” she added. “We love being able to connect so many women in our community.”
The second talk for 2019, presented by Interior Designer Sarah Coe, will switch gears and talk about how to create style and comfort in every room in your home. On April 10th, from 7pm-9pm, Sarah will offer “designer secrets” that will teach you how to make your home more beautiful and stylish, while creating order and functionality. “Sarah likes to mix unique and vintage pieces with newer things, and she will give us great tips on how to create practical applications with a designer touch in our own homes,” explained Donovan. “Each mom who attends will be entered to win a gorgeous item for their home.”
Sarah Coe Design was established in 2003, and is a full-service interior design firm specializing in remodeling, from floor planning to final touches. “Sarah helped design some spaces in my own home, and I was thrilled with how it turned out,” said Donovan. “I’m so excited for other moms to learn how they can create their own special spaces using Sarah’s design tips and methods. Her style is elegant and timeless, but not masculine. She knows how to create a gorgeous space, but still have it be functional for homes with children and pets.” For more information about Sarah Coe Design, please visit https://www.sarahcoedesign.com/gallery.
“We expect a great turnout for these upcoming Talk Series events,” said Donovan. “For those who will be coming for the first time, it’s an absolute blast. It’s fun to see all these moms connect and make new friends, all while learning about interesting and relatable topics from top-notch speakers. Bring your mom friends and join us in March and April!”
