Glen Ellyn Park District Cancellations and Closures Beginning Friday, March 13th at 3:30 p.m.

Posted on: March 13, 2020

In light of District 41, CCSD 89, and District 87’s decision to close buildings and convert to e-learning, and for the safety and health of our patrons, staff, and community, the Glen Ellyn Park District will also be cancelling all classes (including Preschool), events, practices, group fitness classes, and drop-in programs, and closing Main Street Recreation Center to the public, beginning on Friday, March 13th at 3:30 p.m., until further notice. Please see below for more details.

The decision to cancel classes and close these facilities was extremely difficult, as we recognize that many families rely on the services and programs the Glen Ellyn Park District offers. However, following increased concerns about Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), which has now been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization, we felt this was the best way to proceed during this unprecedented situation.

There are no confirmed cases of the Coronavirus in any of the District 41, CCSD 89, or District 87 schools and no reported contact situations.

As the situation remains fluid, we will continue to closely monitor the local, state, and national responses, follow the recommendations put forth by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and stay in communication with the Village of Glen Ellyn, School District 41, CCSD 89, and Glenbard High School District 87.

Precautions & Cleaning Information
The Park District has and will continue to take proactive steps to help control the potential spread of COVID-19 including:

  • Intensified cleaning schedule including increased frequency of cleaning and disinfecting with EPA-registered products with special attention to high touch areas such as doorknobs and railings.
  • Increased use of whole room disinfectant fogger that disinfects 99.9% of germs.
  • Deep cleaning of facilities over Spring Break.
  • Sanitizing stations will be added in public areas throughout District facilities including Main Street, Spring Avenue, Maryknoll Clubhouse and the Boathouse. Ackerman SFC has seven hand sanitizing stations at the facility.
  • Visual sign campaign throughout the District regarding handwashing and stopping the spread of germs.
  • Reminders to guests to wipe down/disinfect fitness equipment.

Preventative Measures at Home
COVID-19 is a respiratory illness. As with most communicable illnesses, the best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the virus. COVID-19 is believed to be spread mostly from person to person via coughs and sneezes.

Please continue to take every day prevention actions, as outlined by the Center for Disease Control, that prevent the spread of illnesses like COVID-19:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Discourage food and beverage sharing.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Cover cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Stay home if you’re sick and avoid contact with other people until they are well.
  • See your doctor if you have a fever, cough, body aches and fatigue.

People at Risk for Serious Illness from COVID-19
The Center for Disease Control has identified older adults and people who have serious chronic medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and lung disease, as having a higher risk of getting sick from this illness. Please click here to read their recommendations.
