Monday, April 8th Eclipse

Posted on: March 28, 2024

On Monday, April 8, 2024, most of North America will witness a partial or total solar eclipse in the skies. While totality won’t be visible in Chicago, expect a remarkable 94-95% coverage of the sun.

Remember to always use proper solar viewing equipment when observing any type of solar eclipse. This event is a rare treat, as the next total solar eclipse visible in the lower 48 states of the US won’t occur until 2044. The eclipse begins at 12:51 pm, peaks at 2:07 pm, and ends by 3:22 pm in Chicago. Find everything you need to know about the April eclipse and how to prepare on the Adler Planetarium’s blog.

A big thank you once more to State Representative Terra Costa Howard, Senator Laura Ellman, and the Illinois Optometric Association for generously donating eclipse glasses for us to give away at our facilities. They flew off the shelves in no time!
