Heads Up, Glen Ellyn! Cicadas Are on Their Way!

Posted on: April 29, 2024

Get ready for a noisy (but fascinating) natural phenomenon! Starting in late-April and peaking in mid-May, the Chicago region will witness a spectacle that only occurs once in 17 years: an emergence of periodical cicadas.

While their earsplitting buzzing can be loud, cicadas are harmless to humans and pets. However, young trees and shrubs might need some protection. Female cicadas lay eggs in small slits on twigs, which can damage new growth. To safeguard your trees, consider delaying planting and pruning until after the emergence or using physical barriers like netting.

Keep your ears peeled and your curiosity piqued! These incredible creatures won’t be seen again for quite a while.
