Glow in the Park canceled due to weather

Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not cooperate today and the Glen Ellyn Park District is disappointed to announce that the Glow in the Park Lantern Walk scheduled for Sunday, September 11 at 5 p.m. has been canceled due to inclement weather.

It is always a difficult decision to cancel an event. We understand how disappointing it is for our residents and all the individuals who were excited to attend. The District would like to extend one last thank you to our partner, Charlie’s Corner Foundation, for supporting this community event benefitting Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital.

Despite the event cancelation, proceeds from lantern kit purchases and sponsorship funds will be contributed to the NICU at Lurie Children’s. Additionally, online donations can be made to Lurie Children’s by clicking here.

Keep it glowing and show your support for Lurie Children’s by displaying your illuminated lanterns in a window at your home. Send photos of your lanterns to [email protected] and be sure to share them on social media.

We appreciate your understanding and hope you will join us at upcoming free/low cost events including:

Vandalism in Your Parks

Vandalism and destruction of property have become commonplace in our parks and facilities. In addition to the graffiti the District experiences weekly, substantial vandalism recently occurred at Newton Park including arson of the newly renovated playground and repeated destruction of the sensory garden. In the past two years, costs to repair vandalism has increased significantly with the District incurring nearly $40,000 in damages, wasting valuable taxpayer dollars on repairs, labor, and other expenses. Notice: Newton Skate Park Closed for Redevelopment

October 17 Update: Improvements to the District’s skate park at Newton Park are underway. A professional skate park design consultant was engaged for the skate park design. A public meeting was held on April 21st at Spring Avenue Recreation Center. A large group of very engaged users attended and provided constructive feedback. A revised concept was placed on order June 22. Demolition was completed in late August, followed by crack protection, asphalt and new color coating. This color coating needs high temperature to be applied and had to be done in the month of September before equipment delivery. The skate ramps are coming in mid-December and are expected to take only a few weeks to install. The skate park is closed while these improvements take place. For more information, please contact Nathan Troia at [email protected].

The opening of Sunset Pool will be delayed until 2pm on Saturday, July 23 due to the Gators end of season swim meet. There will be no Adult Lap Swim (10am-1pm) or Adult/Tot Shallow Only Swim (11am-12pm). Following the meet and weather permitting, Open Swim will be available from 2pm-7:30pm. • FREE lifeguard training and uniform
  • Up to $200 to be used for Park District programs (must be able to work until September 5)
    • Receive $100 if you work a minimum of 30 hours from date of certification to 9/5.

Lake Ellyn Shoreline Project Update

July 12, 2022 – Recently, a strike by International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 against three construction materials companies – Lehigh Hanson, Lafarge Holcim and Vulcan Materials – began June 7 and has halted work at 30 quarries in northern Illinois that produce aggregate material, such as sand, gravel, and stone, impacting construction projects throughout the Chicago Area. This gravel material is critical to the Lake Ellyn Shoreline project and is contributing to the delay of the project. A permeable paver walkway will be installed after the retaining wall. The base of the walkway is the aggregate material that is hard to source at the moment due to the protest. The general contractor is making every effort to obtain materials where available to finish the project.
